Blueberry Pie Smoothie

This smoothie is my go-to breakfast at the moment, it's packed full of all the right nutrients to fuel you through the morning. This blueberry pie smoothie has blueberries, a banana, soy yogurt, flaxseed, almonds and cinnamon, it tastes like dessert, but is super healthy.

Whilst I'm a complete savoury person usually, I always find that I need a hit of something sweet in the morning to boost my blood sugar. By adding a mix of protein and healthy fats, it also ensures the sugars have more of a steady release, helping to keep you full throughout the morning!

So, why is this smoothie so good for you? Bananas deliver plenty of vitamin C, as well as magnesium and potassium - essential for muscle function and fluid balance within the body. Blueberries, whilst tasting delicious are also powerful sources of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients; they're also rich in vitamin C, K, manganese and copper. Soy yogurt delivers a great source of complete proteins and calcium, essential for muscle and bone maintenance respectively. Flaxseeds are a source of short chain omega 3s (ALA) and it's recommended we eat at least 2g of ALA a day - a tbsp of flaxseed is about 10g, providing 2.2g of ALA. However, whilst it's key that we consume short chain omega 3s, our bodies aren't great at converting them to the long chain omegas that are essential for our brain health, so it's still worth taking an EPA and DHA supplement, made from micro algae oil, like this one. Almonds, like flax seed also contain a good amount of protein and fibre, as well as delivering plenty of all important iron, vitamin e and much much more. The water in this smoothie will help to hydrate you and boost you towards that all important 2L per day. And last but not least, we have cinnamon - it not only tastes great, but is thought to help regulate blood sugar levels, some studies have shown just half a tsp a day to be beneficial to both blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
