Turmeric & Ginger Spiced Oats

Warming turmeric and ginger oats with spiced apple, sweet raisins and toasted almonds. A nutritious breakfast loaded with great ingredients, to keep you full throughout the morning!

On a cold winter's morning, there's nothing better than a warming bowl of oats, for that cosy feeling before braving the world. The turmeric adds a subtle savouriness to the oats that really compliments the slightly sharp and acidic flavour of the stewed apple, all brought together with sweet, chewy raisins, a drizzle of maple syrup and crunchy toasted almond flakes.

Oats are rich in fibre, protein and plenty of other vitamins and minerals, they also contain beta-glucans; sugars found in the cell walls of oats. Beta-glucans have been shown to improve blood cholesterol levels, are beneficial to gut bacteria and also help to regulate our blood sugars. Oats are a great breakfast for this very reason - providing slow-release energy for your morning.

Many spices have great health properties, including turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. I used fresh turmeric in these oats, which could also be substituted for dried if you can't get your hands on any fresh. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it's also known for helping digestion and boosting anti-oxidant activity within the body. Ginger is another powerful root, known best for helping to relieve nausea, it can also help with digestion and can provide anti-inflammatory effects to the body. Cinnamon is also thought to help to regulate blood sugar levels, again, helping to keep you full throughout the morning. So, this bowl of oats not only tastes super delicious, it has a whole range of nourishing ingredients too!

Oats:
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp mixed spice
  • 2-inch piece ginger
  • 2-inch piece turmeric, or 1 tsp dried turmeric
  • 2 cups non-dairy milk*

*Note: use your favourite non-dairy milk here - soy, oat and almond will all work well & it's up to you whether these are sweetened or unsweetened varieties.

Method

  1. Dice the apple into 1cm pieces, removing the core but leaving the skin. Add to a saucepan with the maple syrup, mixed spice and cinnamon. Simmer on a low-medium heat for 10 minutes.
  2. To make the oats, add the oats, flaxseed, cinnamon and mixed spice to a pan, then peel and grate the ginger and turmeric into the pan, add the milk and maple syrup (to taste) and simmer for 7-10 minutes, stirring often until the oats are tender. Add a splash more milk just before serving if required.
  3. Divide the oats into two bowls and top each with the stewed apple, a sprinkling of raisins and a toasted flaked almonds and enjoy!
