Miso Sesame Tofu

Crisp sweet and salty miso sesame tofu with spring onions and a hint of chili. Despite having been around for thousands of years in Asian cuisine, tofu can seem a little daunting to many of us when we first try to cook it at home. You want it flavourful, crispy and super versatile so it can go with tons of your favourite dishes - this recipe does all that and more!

My favourite way to cook tofu - the way I cooked it the first time I really enjoyed it at home - is to bake it. A quick marinade in the sweet, salty, spicy sauce and baked to perfection. A little crisp and golden around the edges and chewy in the middle, with plenty of flavour to complement your other dishes.

You could try it with a side of stir-fried greens, with fried rice, noodles, lettuce wraps, spring rolls, your favourite stir frysalad, or Buddha bowl, there are really so many possibilities - you could even have it as a delicious healthy snack! Full of protein for muscle maintenance and building, calcium for healthy bones, manganese for our digestion, bone and blood formation and iron for red blood cells, helping to keep us energised.

Miso Sesame Tofu | Serves: 4 | Time: 30 mins

You'll need

  • Large baking tray
  • Grease-proof paper (I use reusable)
  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 block tofu
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1.5 tbsp miso paste (I used red)
  • 2 tsp agave syrup (sub: maple)
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes
  • 2 spring onions
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (I used black)

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C fan and line a baking tray with grease-proof paper.
  2. Mix together the sesame oil, miso, agave and chili flakes in a bowl, then dice the tofu into 1-2cm pieces and gently toss the tofu in the marinade so it's evenly coated.
  3. Let it marinate for a few minutes, then spread out the tofu in an even layer on the lined baking tray and cook for 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp around the edges.
  4. Garnish with sliced spring onions and sesame seeds, serve up with your favourite meal and enjoy!
