Cheesy Garlic Dough Balls with Violife

Cheesy Garlic Dough Balls with Violife
This next recipe is perfect for those with little time who want a delicious entrée without hours of prep. The combination of self raising flour and dairy free yogurt produces a delicious dough that's soft and fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside, from start to finish in under 25 minutes. There's more though, these dough balls are filled with oozy gooey vegan cheese & served up with homemade garlic oil for that classic Italian touch. If using fresh garlic for the oil, make sure it's consumed straight away, or alternatively use some chili flakes for a spicy chili oil instead.
Violife for Pizza
Yesterday I reviewed violife Parmesan style cheese, you can see that post here. For these dough balls I used violife for pizza, cut into little cubes and placed into the middle of the dough before baking. This cheese tastes much like the original flavours of violife - sort of buttery and creamy and pretty similar to edam dairy cheese, which I used to love! Unlike the original violife, this variety melts; it's stretchy, gooey and delicious, and is a pretty good substitute for dairy cheese, you can even see it melting out of some of the dough! I'd be happy to serve this to non-vegans, and be confident there wouldn't be any complaints!

Once again, I found myself eating - lets call it sampling the cheese, for scientific purposes of course, and it turns out this cheese is just as good melted as it is straight out of the packet which is definitely a positive. Dairy free cheeses I have tried in the past that are intended to be cooked have a strange taste before being heated, that is definitely not the case with this one and it would be just as good in a regular sandwich as a toasted one, so you don't have to buy a different cheese for every single purpose! Once again, violife have excelled in their dairy free cheese making abilities!

Cheesy Garlic Dough Balls | Serves: 2 | Time: 25 mins

You'll need:

  • Baking tray
  • Grease-proof paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Knife

Ingredients:

Dough:
  • 1 cup self raising flour
  • 1/2 cup plain dairy free yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • pinch salt
  • 20-30g violife cheese for pizza
Garlic oil:
  • 2-3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with grease-proof paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients together in the bowl, then add the yogurt and combine with a wooden spoon. Transfer onto a clean surface and knead together, adding flour until no longer sticky but still quite soft (~1/4 cup). Divide the dough into 8 equal size balls.
  3. Cut the cheese into small cubes, press down with your thumb into the center of the dough ball, place the cheese in and fold up the dough round the cheese to form a ball. Repeat with the rest of the dough, place on a baking tray and bake for 15-17 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Meanwhile, mix the garlic powder, parsley, salt and oil and place in a serving dish.
  5. Serve up the dough balls with the garlic oil and enjoy!
